Shopify Plus vs Shopify: when to upgrade

7 min

Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise version, with customizable checkout, advanced automations and dedicated support. But it costs from $2,300/month. When does the upgrade pay for itself? The answer depends on sales volume, operational complexity and features that the standard plan doesn't offer.

Extensible checkout

Plus allows customizing checkout with Checkout Extensibility: upsell apps, custom fields, advanced discount logic and full branding. On standard Shopify, checkout is fixed. If checkout conversion rate is the bottleneck, Plus can pay for itself quickly.

Shopify Flow: automations

Flow is Plus's automation engine. It allows creating no-code workflows: tag customers by behavior, segment orders by rules, notify internal teams, manage inventory automatically. If the operation loses hours on repetitive tasks, Flow frees team time to focus on growth.

Multi-store and markets

Plus allows up to 9 additional stores (expansion stores) at no extra cost. Ideal for brands operating in multiple countries, with B2B separate from B2C, or needing segment-specific stores. On the standard plan, each store is a separate subscription.

When the upgrade pays off

Plus is generally justified when the operation bills over $500K/month, needs customized checkout, operates in multiple countries or depends on complex automations. Below that volume, the Advanced plan ($299/month) with third-party apps is usually sufficient.
